the obligatory fast of Ramadhan is Sunnah Mustahabbah, not wajib.
It is recommended for the Muslim to fast six days of Shawwal, and in
this there is great virtue and an immense reward. Whoever fasts these six days
will have recorded for him a reward as if he had fasted a whole year, as was
reported in a sahih hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings of
Allah be upon him). Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him)
reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
him) said:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">"Whoever fasts Ramadhan and
follows it with six days of Shawwal, it will be as if he fasted for a
lifetime."Narrated by Muslim, Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nisa'i and Ibn
Majah

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The
Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) explained this when
he said: "Whoever fasts for six days after ('Eid) al-Fitr has completed
the year: (whoever does a good deed (hasanah) will have ten hasanah like
it)." According to another report: "Allah has made for each hasanah
ten like it, so a month is like fasting ten months, and fasting six days
completes the year." [An-Nisa'i and Ibn Majah. See also Sahih
at-Targhib wa't-Tarhib, 1/421). It was also narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah with
the wording: "Fasting for the month of Ramadhan brings the reward of ten
like it, and fasting for six days brings the reward of two months, and that is
the fasting of the whole year."

Hanbali and Shafi'i fuqaha' explained that fasting six days of Shawwal
after fasting Ramadhan makes it as if one has fasted for an entire year
of obligatory fasts, because the multiplication of the reward applies even to nafil
fasts, because each hasanah brings the reward of ten like it.

the important benefits of fasting six days of Shawwal is that is makes
up for any shortfall in a person's obligatory Ramadhan fasts, because no
one is free of shortcomings or sins that have a negative effect on his fasting.
On the Day of Resurrection, some of his nafil deeds will be taken to
make up the shortcomings in his obligatory deeds, as the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">"The first thing for which
people will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection will be their
salah (prayer). Our Lord, may He be glorified and exalted, will say to His
angels - although He knows best - 'Look at the salah of My slave, whether it is
complete or incomplete.' If it is perfect, it will be recorded as perfect, and
if something is lacking, He will say, 'Look and see whether My slave did any
voluntary (nafil) prayers.' If he did some voluntary prayers, [Allah] will say,
Complete the obligatory actions of My slave from his voluntary actions.' Then
all his actions will be dealt with in a similar manner."Narrated by Abu

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">On the authority of Anas ibn Sirin:I was with Ibn ‘Umar at ‘Arafat, and when he rested, I rested with him, until the Imam came and he prayed with him Zuhr and ‘Asr. Then he did wuquf with him, as did I and some fellows of mine; until the Imam went forth [from ‘Arafah to Muzdalifah], so we went forth with him, until we reached a narrow path near Ma’zimayn, where he halted his camel, and we halted, as we thought that he wanted to pray. His servant who was holding his animal said: “He does not wish to pray, but he remembered that the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) when he reached this place, he fulfilled his need [i.e. urinated], so he [i.e. Ibn ‘Umar] loves to fulfil his need [here].”

(Ahmad narrated it (no. 6151) with a sahih chain as said by Sh‘ayb al-Arna’ut)

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
It is reported from ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ood (may Allah be pleased with him), according to which the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:

“The last one to enter Paradise will be a man who will walk once, stumble once and be burned by the Fire once. Allaah has given me something that He has not given to the first and the last.’ A tree will be raised up for him, and he will say, ‘O Lord, bring me closer to this tree so that I might shelter in its shade and drink of its water.’ Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, will say: ‘O son of Adam, perhaps if I give you that, you will ask Me for something else.’ He will say, ‘No, O Lord,’ and he will promise that he will not ask Him for anything else, and his Lord will excuse him because he has seen something that he cannot help wanting. So he will be brought near to it and he will shelter in its shade and drink of its water. Then another tree will be raised up for him that is more beautiful than the first, and he will say: ‘O Lord, bring me closer to this tree so that I might drink of its water and shelter in its shade, and I will not ask You for anything else.’ He will say: ‘O son of Adam, did you not promise Me that you would not ask Me for anything else?’ He will say: ‘Perhaps if I bring you near to it, you will ask Me for something else.’ He will promise that he will not ask Him for anything else, and his Lord will excuse him because he has seen something that he cannot help wanting. The above Hukum of rasool (s.a.w) has been fulfilled in the best of ways by the SAHABA . I have collected only a few examples to illustrate the immense love the SAHABA showed for the prophet (s.a.w). There are tons and tons of reports, however , i have collected only a few ahadeeth to shed some light and give a brief insight to this beautiful topic. Please note that some narrations may be weak due to their isnaad and etc, however, the love the SAHABA had for the prophet (s.a.w) is unmatched until Qiyamah In sha Allah, and we have thousands of books authored on this topic. Hence even if a narration is da'eef, read it for knowledge and contemplate on it.
